STEM Roadshow 2024 DAC Recruiting Event

Last week DEVCOM Analysis Center (DAC) supported the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Roadshow 2024! Oscar Perez, Ph.D., and Mason Lipford from DAC embarked on a journey spanning over 300 miles, visiting five high schools across Augusta, Georgia; Columbia, Greenwood and Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Asheville, North Carolina. This collaborative effort involved coordination with 25 other Army units.
Data analysis and cybersecurity hands-on interactive exercises such as data reconnaissance, cyber exploitation, and vulnerability mitigation were uniquely developed by Perez for the event. Perez and Lipford had the opportunity to engage with 237 high school students who were participating in these exercises. For one of these activities, a Raspberry Pi One was used to simulate a temperature sensor, a humidity sensor and a digital display using an 8×8 RGB screen, and Raspberry Pi Two was used to simulate a traffic light controller. An activity roadmap was then presented to the students outlining interactive activities such as finding OSINT (Open Source Intelligence), navigating the Linux operating system to launch a python script, and ultimately creating a command to audit the authentication security of the traffic light simulator.
DAC careers in STEM were showcased to students pursuing a college degree, and students actively enlisted in the military, offering a potential pathway after fulfilling their contractual obligations. Students were able to explore internship opportunities, research programs, and STEM fellowships. This introduction to STEM enlightened students into how DAC plays a pivotal role in informing Army transformation and readiness decisions throughout the system’s life cycle through objective integrated systems-level Analysis, and the development of credible data and analytical tools.
